State House Member Tyrone Ellis (D-Starkville) received a travel voucher from the Billy McCoy (D-Rienzi) led House of Representatives to attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado next week for "educational" purposes. These expenditures are apparently approved by the House Management Committee chaired by Rep. J. P. Compretta (D - Bay St. Louis).

The stated purpose of the trip was "educational". Ironically, they misspelled "Colorada".

No word as to whether or not an investigation will be launched into the origins of the expenditure.

anyone getting reimbursed for an educational trip to the Republican convention? [rhetorical question]

I am still searching my map of the USA for “Colorada”, help please.

The third page shows an “estimated” total cost of $5k. Is there a chance he will get paid MORE if his “expenses” outweigh his payment of $1760?

Yes.  The 1760 is just his advance.  After the trip, he will submit an itemized travel report.

That’s what I thought...this is the tip of the iceberg...might make it an even 5280 in honor of the Mile High City!

"To the victor go the spoils”, my question, however: in what have they been victorious?

He must’ve been hanging out with the Mayor of Mandeville.

doesn’t “colorada” = “colored” as in Playa Colorada = colored beach?

Wouldn’t a course or two at Antonelli College be a lot cheaper?

Posted by reddneck on 08-18-2008 at 08:58 AM [link]

That $1760 is for lodging?  $350/night is some nice education

Wow, what a sham. I bet we dont hear a word about this outside this website, and maybe JT and Dave (cases like this is the only time I appreciate them being on the air).

What is even more scary when you look at this, is that Obama was on the political level of Tyrone Ellis just under 4 years ago.  I wonder if Illinois paid for his trip to the DNC convention then?

Kingfish, Eddie Price has had some shady dealings, IMHO. One of my dear blogging friends lives there and has been leading the petition drive to remove him.

I guess this negates the idea of taking up a collection for Gene and Travis to be able to attend (since neither are).  They can just go them an education as well, I assume.  Qualifying for this grant seems pretty easy.

Is there an online form to fill out so I can apply for one to attend the Pub convention?

Gallo was all over this at the 7AM slot with Rep. Rita Martinson and Rep. Mark Baker being interviewed.  Martinson is on the Management Committee and she said that there has never been any vote by that committee on this expenditure.  Gallo mentioned something about having notified the State Auditor about it so perhaps it will at least get investigated.

Why can’t the state party pay for this?  Someone in Jackson needs to get this to CL.  Also to ethics commission.  Oh. McCoy friend runs this too.  Unbelievable.

House Management Committee chaired by Rep. J. P. Compretta (D - Bay St. Louis).

Was Compretta the guy that kept getting paid for standing in for Speaker McCoy even after McCoy returned?

Posted by JDBerry on 08-18-2008 at 10:25 AM [link]

JDBerry,

The answer is YES!

I like Eddie Price’s excuse for going out to Pebble Beach golf tournament and having it paid for by contractors. Said it was to study the architecture of buildings.

Word from a Management Committee member is that nothing has been submitted to the committee to approve so this was done without their approval.  Ellis circumvented the committee, and its the committee that would approve such.

more irony - Compretta is on the House ethics committee

2007-2008 Top “earners” from the House:

Speaker Billy McCoy: $83,575 salary, $8,452 mileage and expense, $92,027 total

Speaker Pro Tem J.P. Compretta: $64,975 salary, $19,719 mileage and expense, $84,694 total

Rep. John Hines: $23,575 salary, $31,587 mileage and expense, $55,162 total

Rep. Tyrone Ellis: $23,575 salary, $30,732 mileage and expense, $54,307 total

Rep. Danny Guice: $23,575 salary, $30,593 mileage and expense, $54,168 total

Rep. Kelvin Buck: $23,575 salary, $27,722 mileage and expense, $51,297 total

from CL article where Tyrone Ellis said “The ones who make the most are the ones who work the most,”

Ellis, who earned $54,307 in salary and travel expenses, said he’s losing money by serving. Almost $30,732 of his pay went for mileage and travel expenses.

Besides driving the 250-mile round trip from Starkville to Jackson, he also attends meetings and conferences in places such as Washington. Ellis said he’ll attend a utility conference in New Orleans next week.

“I go there to learn. I don’t go there to play,” he said.
