The Real Deal
Game on. Sara Palin knocked it out of the park
by Alan Lange
Every once in a while, you feel like a witness to history. I was lucky enough to see it in person. September 3rd was one of those nights in the Xcel Center in St. Paul. Win or lose in November, Sarah Palin has shown that she is the real deal. It may well have been one of the most impressive political speeches in a generation. That's especially true when 90% of the national audience hadn't even heard of Palin just one week ago. When you get a standing ovation in the cheap seats, you know it's a good speech, and she did.

I was always taught that the best way to deal with a bully was to punch 'em in the nose. Giuliani and Palin teamed up to go on offense and in a way that was effective for the Republicans for the first time in this entire presidential campaign.

McCain didn't choose Palin to win moderate/independent voters. McCain has that territory pretty well staked out. McCain needed Palin to shore up his base . . . and shore up his base she did. She was reminiscent of Margaret Thatcher in that she gave a tough, no-nonsense delivery that was unabashedly conservative.

After all of the tabloid b.s. was boiled down, it was just her talking to the American people and she delivered. Liberal women, unions and the Obama campaign are officially scared of Palin. It is already manifesting itself locally and nationally. Instead of words like confident, forceful, and direct, the spin machine will spit out images like sneering, bitter, and smug.

Great lines
From "the speech" . . . .
I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities."

Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines...build more nuclear plants...create jobs with clean coal...and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources. We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers."

In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

Harry Reid, the Majority Leader of the current do-nothing Senate, not long ago summed up his feelings about our nominee.
He said, quote, "I can't stand John McCain." Ladies and gentlemen, perhaps no accolade we hear this week is better proof that we've chosen the right man.

Do you know the difference between bulldogs and hockey moms? Lipstick!

And there is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform -- not even in the state Senate.

Other News, Notes & Observations

I love finding humor in the obtuse. To see that MSNBC is located just to the left of Al Jazeera in the Xcel Center, I just had to smile.

Rudy, Rudy, Rudy

Rudy was relaxed and as on point as he has been since he started his own campaign for the presidency. From his speech . . .

He (Obama) worked as a community organizer, and immersed himself in Chicago machine politics. Then he ran for the state legislature - where nearly 130 times he was unable to make a decision yes or no. He simply voted "present." As Mayor of New York City, I never got a chance to vote "present." And you know, when you're President of the United States, you can't just vote "present." You must make decisions.

Because "change" is not a destination ... just as "hope" is not a strategy.

When speaking to a pro-Israel group, Obama favored an undivided Jerusalem. Until the very next day when he changed his mind. I hope for his sake, Joe Biden got that VP thing in writing.

Endgame

It's hard to know what will happen in 60 days, but I know what will happen in the next five. Expect a massive assault on Palin by the mainstream media and liberal blogs over the coming days. It will all come out of the woodwork and it will come quickly. Just in case you want to see what the "objective media really thinks . . .

(hattip Slabbed)

Some, like Karl Rove, think that will backfire. We will see.

The tide is certainly with Obama, and the election is still his to lose. If he does lose, Obama's name will become synonymous in Democratic circles with Dukakis. Democrats kill their own, especially those that screw up a big lead for the presidency.

As my accountant recently said . . . pray for McCain but plan for Obama. However, I think tonight the prayers might just get a little more momentum.

Yes, she was absolutely fantastic.  B/t her announcement Friday and last night, the Dems were scared $#!+less.  After last night’s speech, they are totally scared out of their minds.  They were totally unprepared for this.

As Pat Buchanan said (think it was him), Palin is a “vote-getter”.  She is and the Dems know it.  If nothing changes, she is going to be the rare VP pick (at least in recent years) that actually enhances the chances of the ticket getting elected.

The line in Palin’s speech that got the biggest response here was this one....
“Terrorist states are seeking new clear weapons without delay....he(Obama)wants to meet them without pre conditions. Al Qaeda terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America......he’s(Obama)worried that someone won’t read them their rights.”
That sumarizes much of the difference between the two parties and the danger of both Obama/Biden.  If you have heard or seen the speech Obama has delivered about his plans to reduce our defense, including space exploration and
nuclear defense, it is the most worrisome of all his proposals.  Mississippians fully understand this position by Obama/Biden is very serious; a deal breaker regardless of party affiliation.

from JFP comments:

She is the wet dream of the American middle class. This is only more proven by the veterans in the audience wearing the buttons that say “My Vote Is For The Hot Chick” with her picture.

She got the “mom” vote. She got the “special needs child” vote. She got the “my family is messed up” vote. She got the “my son is going to Iraq” vote.

Minus Cindy’s McCain’s surgically-crafted facial expressions there were moments in the speech where I almost said, “Damn. If only she were running.” Then I reminded myself of her Right to Life ideals.

Guys, I wanted to HATE her...and I didn’t.

More:

The whole thing just ticks me off. I can’t remember the last time I felt this angry.

The repugnants republicans unleashed the grand wizard, dragon and klavern on Obama last night. We’re not afraid though. Palin might be able to pull a gun out her behind and scare the hockey redneck, as he called himself, into marrying her ugly, unchaste and knocked up daughter, but she doesn’t have enough guns to scare us. When you don’t have a plan, any real substance or personal accomplishments, you attack the black guy like she did last night.

Did y’all see the audience? I haven’t seen that much old and ugly since I visited some of the country’s unfunded and underfunded zoos. Hell, I thought I was watching a klan get-back-together convention with a few spots here and there. It wasn’t just a Farce on Minnesota, it was a bad Fart on Minnesota.

If you noticed people, Palen was short on any plans of chance. My buddy Bubba I got a good look at Palen last night. I tell you, if she going to do any pole dancing she had better seek out the blind and desperate, for she is ugly inside and outside. Besides if she dances for you and you don’t like it therefore refuse to tip her, she’s liable to pull out her gun and take your whole wallet.

In reference to the above quote:

I really wish Walt had spoke at the Democratic National Convention so we could all see how the average “Democrat-on-the-street” feels.

Palin rocked.  Media was pissed cause they didn’t “know” which VP candidate was going to be picked.  Instead of media just saying--well, crud, we got it wrong, lets find out who Palin is...several have launched attacks on the person because THEY didn’t get the “inside scoop"---they couldn’t be the news person who crows and say--see I called it.  What egos.  Dems are screaming and running in circles because we are in this election and they know it.  Don’t use race....but Obama dems will continually talk about it.  Dont beat up on Obama or wife cause that’s just mean....but Obama dems didn’t mind dragging something as personal as an unplanned pregnancy out there.  and dont forget--20 years ago, her husband had a dui.  “As an adult Obama admitted that during high school he used marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol, which he described at the Saddleback Church Civil Forum on the Presidency as his greatest moral failure” Oops--I guess that was suppose to be put in the back room along with the no actual experience, the preacher that none of us can forget, voting present because that sure won’t tick off the shady people hiding behind the candidate.  “this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform—not even in the state Senate.” Holy crud!  If he hasn’t handled these things---do you REALLY think being President of the United States is the place to be?  WHO IS GOING TO BE WRITING THOSE LAWS FOR HIM.

Alan, you said pray for McCain but plan for Obama.  My dear, you’re wrong.  Pray everyday no matter what.  In politics, know the candidates.  McCain/Palin will win this election.

Sorry I somehow posted before I was finished writing.

JDBERRY, your post is lower than the lowest scum bag.

This just sticks in my craw----If you are NOT EXPERIENCED in the things that are required for the job (President of the US).....WHO IS GOING TO BE DOING THAT JOB AND MAKING THOSE DECISIONS “BEHIND THE SCENES” FOR YOU?

That scared me to death. Then it got me mad.  Print a speech off, mark thru all of the fluff to get down to the meat of what is being said....and also to see if there is actually any meat at all.  I don’t need hollywood or the entire personal injury bar running the country.  I need a person who is experienced with a proven record of having to make hard decisions.  President of the US isn’t a fluff job.

jplay, thank for your colorful opinion.

I’m assuming you are referring to the quoted comments I posted from the Jackson Free Press that came from the link in the original post by Alan - “It is already manifesting itself locally

Palin gave another political speech.  I wasn’t inspired by talk from a politician.  Sorry.  She does gain my respect from what she has accomplished in her tenure in her various offices, but I am not all up in arms about someone talking to me from a prepared statement that was focus group tested for maximum effect.

Yes, she is much more believable than Barry Obama, but who actually believes anything that Barry says?  Idiots?  Morons?  Children?  To say her speech was better than Obama’s coronation speech is insulting to Governor Palin, the bar was very low for her to jump over.  She would have had to dig to get under it in my opinion.

Call me cynical, but until she drags John McCain, kicking and screaming from the center and back to the tenets of good government that we enjoyed during the mid to late 1990’s, I am not enthused at all about the direction the fed is heading.  There only remains a choice between bad, McCain, and friggin’ terribly, awfully, ridiculously suicidal, Barry Obama.

Gov Palin’s performance was certainly entertaining and funny.  Good one-liner’s much like Ann Richards when she said Bush was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.  Richards lost.  I think she will hurt McCain.  He will get the vote of the extreme right wing conservatives that Palin appeals to, but she will not help him with the ‘independent’ or swing vote - ok, she may keep a few extreme conservatives from voting for Bob Barr.  Her ‘abortion under no circumstances - not even incest or rape’ will not grab swing votes.  Her ‘teach intelligent design’ alongside evolution science will be appealing only to those already ‘not for Obama or a Dem’.  But she may alienate the more progressive conservatives and swing voters that McCain appeals to.  McCain’s a maverick.  Palin’s a conservative extremist.  Humorous, yes - but so is Al Sharpton.

SP, you’re over-reaching, and sound much like the Dems all over the country who are belittling Palin one way or another.

Posted by Reagan Dem on 09-04-2008 at 01:31 PM [link]

I have been talking to some of my Democrat friends (!) and relatives, and trying to read the excreta on the JFP.  I can only conclude the following:  Democrats are REAL worked up over Palin, so they must see her as a threat.  If she were “such a ridiculous choice” they’d be smiling and quietly counting the votes and takin’ bets on Cabinet positions.  They ain’t.

Drudge is reporting that 37 million watched the speech.

I like how she is acting the expert on how Palin could’ve treated her kids.

What the hell does she know about being a parent?

I love it when people who have no children (and not even a pet) give me child rearing advice.......

Going to write something on factcheck.org tomorrow but I can safely say that that website is not the end-all on how true a story is and makes quite a few mistakes.

McCain’s is more of a centrist (when he’s not running for President and trying to get conservative votes).  Palin is too extreme right for those of us in the middle.  I can support McCain, but the thought of Palin becoming President is unacceptable.  I can live with Obama and/or Biden (I actually like Biden).

Posted by Stiff Pigeon on 09-04-2008 at 02:25 PM [link]

I don’t quite get the two seemingly conflicting comments from Stiff Pigeon.  First you say that Pailn’s speech was nothing, then you post the results of her slaughtering her competition in the Alaska governor’s election.  What gives?

Contradictory much?

Posted by Two Dogs on 09-04-2008 at 02:26 PM [link]

Sorry, I meant the first two comments from SP were in obvious conflict with each other.

And then you said that you like Biden but don’t like Obama?  They voted the exact same 100% of the time when Obama actually voted.  Is your brain exploding or do you just hate half-black people?

Posted by Two Dogs on 09-04-2008 at 02:28 PM [link]

Two Dogs, I am sure you don’t get a lot of things.  Once you are over being attracted to Palin for her looks and speaking ability, examine her political positions.  If you are still attracted to her politically, then you are closer to Eric Rudolph’s ideology than John McCain’s.

Posted by Stiff Pigeon on 09-04-2008 at 05:32 PM [link]

Uh, what does what I think about Sarah Palin have to do with what you said, SP?  Your comments appear contradictory to me, at first you say that you are a centrist that is for the farthest leftwinger in US history, then you say that Palin was funny, then you say that McCain, a devout centrist is a maverick, then you compared Palin to Al Sharpton, then you stated that evolution was “science,” then you posted Palin’s stats for cleaning up in the governor’s race.  That appears to be all over the place to me, from ditch to ditch.  I was just asking for ruling on your ping-pong match.

If you want my opinion on Palin, you can check the comment above your first one, and oddly enough it was not about me jizzing my skivvies over her appearance.  But, at least her ears are not the size of small cities and throw planets out of their orbit.

i am encouraged,by the McCAIN/PALIN ticket.however,i hope that the emphasis between now and the election will be more than national security.bush almost sunk the party due to the war on terror and katrina.he allowed the economy, illegal immigration, pork barrel spending and everything else to get out of control while concentrating on only the war on terror.our president must be able to keep several balls in the air rather than having tunnel vision on just one.the candidate that will promise to deal with all the important issues will win the election.certainly, the democrats and self made poor looking for entitlements are going to vote for obama, but the independents and moderates are looking for something other than big business lining their pockets at the expense of the working public on necessities such as fuel, food, health care or socialism for those who are looking for the american dream without earning it.

The msm is starting to cover Palin’s supporters with Downs Syndrome children. I have tried to understand the hatred by feminist toward her and I believe their derangement towards her is because she is a reminder of something they want to forget. If anyone ever studies women receiving abortions it may explain their behavior. The men that hate her are homos. Just my thought.
