U.S. Attorney Bob Norman, who has been assigned to the Scruggs investigation for several years, said his office is still investigating Birmingham businessman P.L. Blake for his possible involvement in a conspiracy.

Norman wouldn’t comment further about the case. However, a reliable source with direct knowledge of Blake’s investigation said a grand jury indictment could be handed down “sometime in December.”

An attorney for Blake, Tom Freeland of Oxford, had no comment on behalf of his client.

Blake’s possible indictment has been speculated about for years, but nothing has happened. The charges the grand jury is considering against Blake are unknown.
Scruggs, his son Zach, law partner Sidney Backstrom, Patterson and Balducci were charged with conspiracy, bribery and wire fraud. Each pleaded guilty to charges related to the scheme and were sentenced to prison. Only Zach Scruggs, who pleaded to not telling authorities about the scheme, is out of prison and living back in Oxford.

If Blake is actually indicted it could become a conflict of interest if local defense lawyer Christi McCoy is selected by President Barack Obama to replace Jim Greenlee as U.S. Attorney, something widely believed will happen at any time.
It was previously reported that the U.S. Attorney’s office asked Patterson about Blake’s involvement in the bribery scheme in front of a grand jury. However, no indictments came at that time.

McCoy is a defense attorney for Patterson and was present when Patterson testified to the grand jury. Her client could be a witness against Blake if the potential case against him went to trial. But a veteran former U.S. attorney said there is a system set up to avoid this conflict-of-interest.

He said McCoy would have to recuse herself from any dealings surrounding the Blake investigation and would not be allowed to look at any of the document.

However, he added, Blake could request that a prosecutor from another district be brought in to handle the case.

This is a great article by Quinn.  I am sure the CL and Sun Herald will pick up on this soon.  The McCoy-conflict angle is an interesting one.  I just wonder what jurisdiction would wind up with it.  His home in Alabama, maybe?

Excellent article.  It seems nobody wanted to write about PL Blake.  There are several active items out there to watch.  Did Peters and DeLaughter get deposed?  What’s going on in the Wyatt vs everybody case?  And Scruggs I is still active.

Spreading gossip on public officials does not meet the standard of a criminal conspiracy, like Snuffy Smith , who started the rumor about the fishing hole being haunted,. Snuffy on his way to the hole muttered to himself it was the best rumor he ever started when a friend asked if he was not scared it was haunted.
If the DA is interested , I have a ditty bag full of gossip myself, that would titiilate the public, but be hard to prove in a court of law. Priests in Mississippi for example are now permitted to spread gossip without censorship..
Snuffy in a new suit , and on the stand, would make for good drama and offer us a Mississippi moment to be sure.

statefed, much could be said of having more than gossip in proving the state likes notability of laws. Not to further an off topic, I’ll pass.

statefed, I don’t get your remark.  Court records have Scruggs admitting to the $50 million to Blake for cutting newspaper articles and alerting Scruggs to maneuvering in political “cloakrooms,” as Scruggs put it, from Mississippi to Washington.  Blake is mentioned on the wire tap as reported.

The depositions refer to Eaton/Frisby case.  Peters was to be deposed on Oct 1st and DeLaugher was to be deposed Oct 2nd.

The Wyatt case is one that is already in the court system.  See prior post on this website at http://tinyurl.com/yae94c2

Gossip on Public officials?  The only public officials in the article above were McCoy, Greenlee, and Norman.  I didn’t see any gossip--Paul did a good job of covering the McCoy-conflict question.

Any one who knows Blake, knows he is no Svengali. He is not a lawyer, psychologist, sociologist or minister by training or aptitude, and to imply that he had the capacity to influence powerful , political people seems absurd in my mind.
The idea he ‘cut out newspaper articles for Scruggs,’ and that somehow implied a conspiracy to cause professional men to comitt criminal actions appears beyond the pale.
That is the reason I characterize him as Snuffy Smith, who lives in back country with men of similiar disposition from birth.
That is not to suggest that he is adverse to taking advantage of what is being offered to advance personal or financial gain. It could be he just knows men of similiar disposition in government in Mississippi. I myself, have known many in my time, and feel there or others on this board of the same opinion.  Time will tell, but I find this board , the most enlightened thing that has happened to Mississippi in some time. I digress too far, I fear.

Blake is certainly no Svengali.  But - in direct conflict with your next statement - it is absolutely absurd to say that he did NOT have the capacity to influence powerful, political people.  I know of many different powerful, political, and politically powerful people that he influenced directly and most all of that influence was used to his great financial gain.  And this isn’t based on rumors - but on documented and proven facts.  There are many different reasons that he could be indicted - not just in the cases at hand but others over the years.  If he is, the resulting testimony will be interesting reading for years to come.

I don’t know PL Blake, statefed, I guess that’s why your remark went past me.

Here’s what I do know.

08/25/04 deposition of Richard Scruggs in Wilson v Scruggs.  Starting at page 104…..why is all of this money getting paid to P L Blake through Joey Langston….  $1 million…..another $4 million…$468,450 per quarter…$50 million is on page 122.  Page 117, still discussing money paid to Blake, Scruggs says, “I just don’t know.  I know you questioned Mr. Blake, at least I’m assuming you did yesterday.  I know his deposition was taken yesterday.” Page 442—another $963,681 check to PL Blake.

Ok.  All this money going to P L Blake, and possible deposition as well in this case (civil action 3:02CV525LN).

Trial transcript of Luckey v Scruggs (June 8, 2005), starting on page 510.  “Q: Mr. Scruggs, this is Exhibit 677.  Now, that shows fees paid to P. L. Blake, August 17, ’98, a million dollars; 12/2/1998, $4,000,000; and 4/9/99, 5 million.  And then there’s a column at the bottom, fees paid to the Langston law firm and a note to right-hand side says: All of these fees were paid to me and I forward to P. L. Blake.  Can you tell me why P. L. Blake got that $10 million worth of fees in a period of approximately eight months in ’98 and ’99?”

Question:  “…why was this note written telling you that those fees actually went to P.L., but apparently on your books they were paid to the Langston law firm?  Why did you forward or send those funds through the law firm to P. L. Blake instead of simply paying him yourself?”

Question (concerning DMG payments):  “And tell us what P. L. Blake did for $468 thousand a quarter through the year 2023 and $10 million on the front end, $50 million more or less?”

Now add those to yet another instance of PL Blake coming up (as P Quinn put in his article re wire taps).

Reading the transcripts to these 3 separate events---P L Blake is all over them.  He was also smart enough to hire Tom so there’s no more NMC posting on anything regarding the Scruggs issues.

Snuffy Smith sure does seem to be hanging with the big dogs for many many years, managed to get tobacco payments thru 2023 without being a lawyer, and in one swoop took out NMC.

I must admit I had no idea that Blake was such a ‘middleman’ for powerful and wealthy benefactors for whatever reasons. Given my Delta roots, he was always characterized as Snuffy Smith in his youth. Early on I know that he socialized with people who had far more on their plate than he did so to speak.
I once advise my wife I could be a millionaire. at she replied “ At what costs”,...Given the greed in our society, I now fully realize the costs and I sleep much better at night.
Thanks for the info, that is the reason, I appreciate this message board. Like Friday, ‘Just give me the facts Mamam.....”
