Plane sale? Non-recurring funds again

The House bill to sell the state plane met the purpose of thumbing the body’s nose at Gov. Haley Barbour’s “not business as usual” remarks on cutting spending. But in terms of public policy, it’s more of the same — spending non-recurring funds (net proceeds of the plane’s sale) for recurring expenses (the state car-tag fund). So what do we sell or hock next year?

Sid nails this.  The solution, if the House wants to cut budgetary items, is to cut the number of House members in half.  Lopping off about 60 house members and making the districts larger would put about $2M back in the general fund every year.

Alan,I agree with what you’re saying, but it makes too much sense, which apparently some members of the legislature can’t or won’t comprehend.

Shades of Goveror Palin.  Maybe if Haley would sell the plane, Mr. Speaker would let him borrow his John Deere for his next trip to Washington.

Yea, someone is definitely trying to channel Palin, or at least be seen that way.

On the other hand, it’s sure not obvious to me that a state plane is a big necessity.  Makes sense to sell it now when we need the money.  Maybe buy another when we’re flush.  Planes seem to hold value pretty well, and ones you don’t own cost a lot less to maintain.  Let Haley fly coach.
