Mississippi GOP Primary Sparks a Little Spat

At a meeting two weeks ago to discuss the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “Young Guns” program, Rep. Geoff Davis offered what he said was a “minor observation” regarding how the committee should proceed in terms of involvement in Mississippi’s 1st district GOP primary.

“I simply cautioned that with a potential contested primary, with a new candidate coming in, we might want to give some time to see how the situation develops,” said Davis, who is helping in the NRCC’s recruiting efforts this cycle.

That new GOP candidate is Fox News political commentator Angela McGlowan, who met with Davis about a bid against Democratic incumbent Travis Childers and is now set to join the GOP field as soon as next week.

But Davis’ comment has irked some Mississippi and Capitol Hill GOP operatives, who believe the party has already found it’s best possible candidate in state Sen. Alan Nunnelee.

“When there’s such a prime opportunity to take out a Democratic incumbent, I don’t see the logic of Geoff Davis going out there and being supportive of anybody other than the guy who has already gone out there and outraised and outworked the incumbent,” said one source familiar with Mississippi politics.

Regardless of who either candidate is, the party needs to let the primary take care of itself.  You never know when a Kirk Fordice will come out of nowhere.  However, individuals can support who they want to, unless you’re the Governor or Executive Director, or other party employee.  Then too, you can just misjudge how good of a candidate an individual is.  Charlie Ross was an example.  Charlie is a true pure conservative and I like that about him.  Some other people including the Governor liked that about him.  On the other hand a good man and a good conservative can fail as a candidate, as Charlie did, twice.  He first selected the wrong race against Phil Bryant, and then he misjudged Phil and took after him in the wrong way and that doomed him.  Kirk Fordice on the other hand (one of the best governors in our history despite his personal lapses), didn’t have any party support to begin with but he won it by getting votes.

Ship Island, Its as if people have become so paranoid by a repeat of 2008 (lack of eagerness to support the gop nominee) that people want to just throw the whole primary, tried and tested process out of the window. I agree with you, let the primary take its course. What if there is another true grassroots campaigner out their like Fordice? He knocked on every door he could and he spoke to the voters and got elected.  If raising money is any prediction of a candidate’s ability to connect with voters then Nunnelee will be fine. Because if party leadership thinks he has so much electability then surely they know what voters think and feel? You know what I think? I think they recruited a weak candidate in Nunnelee and they know it! They know he can’t beat Childers and they don’t want anything to lower his shot at winning. Thats why they are fanatical about keeping primary opponents out of the race. The facts are he is not exciting and the general population is likely not thrilled at him as their Congressman for the next 30 years! No wonder Angela is getting in! She sees weakness. Its too late now to try and stop a primary. Party leadership, with all their wisdom, should have recruited a better candidate than Nunnelee to start with!

Angela McGlowan spoke last night in Nashville at the Tea Party convention.  I will have to say she is a good speaker and I would not have a problem if she were elected.  Meanwhile Nunnelle is still my choice because I think that he is best chance to win in Novemeber.  I am just afraid that she is not electable in Novemeber becuase she will seem out of touch with NE Mississippi.  Like it or not she is a Washington insider and her gun remarks can really come to haunt her.  Below is the link to her speach it is short and to the point.  Like I said earlier she is a great speaker.

I’ll totally agree with Contract with America.  She’s a great speaker, nice but I don’t think she’s electable in a general election.  Lee County will go with Childers unless there’s a candidate from close to the area.  Sad to say but that’s the way it is. The Tupelo mayor (a GOP) openly said he voted for and supported Childers because he thought he’d be best for Lee County.  Warped mentality but that’s the way it is.

The current anti-career politician atmosphere in politics coupled with a soft candidate in Nunnelee has opened the flood gates for more candidates in 01. The facts are voters are not completely satisfied with sending Nunnelee to represent Mississippi for the next 30 years without atleast a primary contest. It seems party establishment fear that Nunnelee maybe a little weak and any bump in the road, i.e other candidates may cause a catastrophe in the general match up of Nunnelee v. Childers. I’m not convinced Nunnelee can beat Childers even with 1 million dollars. I welcome more candidates in the primary, it is good for the party because it brings more people into the process. The NRCC needs to avoid partisanship in primaries and concentrate on raising money for November. The Young Guns status is not to be taken seriously because it is just a reflection of who is the “frontrunner.” After all, most primaries are still fairly far away, Mississippi’s is not until June.

Ship Island,
you are so correct about misjudging people.  I misjudged Charlie Ross when he got into the political arena and voted for him.  As one of his constituents it didn’t take me long to realize what a mistake I had made, and apparently I wasn’t alone since he lost his other elections.

I imagine had Charlie been elected congressman, we could depend on him to be a solid conservative with every voting opportunity he is presented, just like Harper now. I may be wrong, but Im very comfortable that Greg Harper votes just like I would want him to, as a conservative, on every bill he sees.  So, misjudgement of either them doesn’t take us down too terrible a road.  Hopefully, we can expect the same voting out of Nunnelee.

I have known Alan practically all of his life and you will get a good solid conservative vote from him if he gets elected.  I served on the State Executive Committee for several years with Greg Harper and the mindsets are basically the same.  Without a doubt, both will make us proud if they get to work together.

I have no problem with a primary. If he’s the nominee, I’ll vote for Henry Ross for Congress.  I don’t think I could vote for McGlowan. I don’t like her stand on guns or taxes.  With Childers, you know what you’re getting.  You don’t with her.

Maybe Alan isn’t a ball of fire but he has substance and that counts.  Roger Wicker wasn’t a ball of fire either but he has come on and is now our best senator, way above old Thad.

CdavidS, I think that is the sentiment for this primary. Who is Angela really? Why does she feel she can come back and just get elected? Does working part-time with fox news really mean Mississippians want you as their Congressman? Does giving a few tea party speeches mean you are the candidate of the teapartiers? Who knows? I think it is between Ross and Nunnelee with Nunnelee currently having an advantage. Angela makes it interesting and will keep the media glued to the primary. But I don’t think Angela will be the candidate. I think a month from now we will probably have a better indication of the competitiveness of this race.
