The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi today filed suit in federal court against the Itawamba County School System, which canceled the prom for one of its high schools when a student challenged a ban on bringing same-sex dates.
The federal suit asks the court to force the school board to reinstate the prom and alleges district officials have violated the First Amendment rights of Constance McMillen, a senior at Itawamba Agricultural High School.
"It's shameful and cowardly of the school district to have canceled the prom and to try to blame Constance, who's only standing up for herself," said Christine Sun, an attorney with the ACLU national LGBT Project. "We will fight tooth and nail for the prom to be reinstated for all students."
The school board met Wednesday and announced it was canceling the prom after McMillen challenged the same-sex date ban. The Mississippi ACLU, which is assisting McMillen, gave the district until Wednesday to change its policy.

Well, pin a red rose on your butt, as my grandmother use to say. and congrats to the press for making abosolutely nothing into a story. I guess when NOTHING else is happing in the US (or atleast nothing that you’re going to report), you got to find your stories somewhere.
Good job, school, you handled it correctly.

Can you sue the school if you don’t have a date or don’t like the date you get????

"Right to Prom” - I don’t remember that in the Bill of Rights.

Unless our leaders in the state capitol are a bunch of pansies it is time to inform a radical socialist group like the aclu to mind their own business. If I were the Superintendant of Schools I would not even respond to this stupid bunch of idiots that only take up cases that are out to destroy the religious views of citizens and are being assisted by our courts.
Case in point; one old athiest woman with the aid of the aclu and the courts took prayer from our schools and replaced it with metal detectors and mass murders. If you are of a gay group or one practicing islam or witchcraft you have freedom in the school. But; don’t dare mention God or the aclu and the courts will expell you or ban you from the school. Whose schools are these anyway, the governments or the citizens of this country. And; speaking of rights, how can you assure one groups rights without denying the rights of others as has happened in our schools.

Ahmen! This is not about being GAY or Straight; it is about the Liberals being stupid and I applaud the Schoold Board for standing up to this ACLU-driven mess. Time we stood up against all of these politically correct issues and started insisting our elected officials stand tall on State’s Rights and the rights of any “community” (however that is defined) to stand up to bullys. Hope the folks in this community shun the parent who put the child up to this attention grabing ploy. Liberals never think, they just feel and to hell with everyone else and their rights. It’s all about the ME in life.
Just me: add to that list for the School Board taking action on this: picking a fight over an issue that is not worth fighting over: check.

The “Right to Prom” is listed right after the “Right Not To Have Anyone Offend You Even When You’ve Just Chosen To Offend Pretty Much Everyone Else.”
It’s one of those new shadowy ones.

The lawsuit asks the court to immediately reinstate the prom and prohibit the district from banning same-sex couples.
What I want to know is, if they manage to force the prom back on, will the ACLU ask the court to enjoin the other students to show up? It’s going to be a lonely dance otherwise.

Elwood, I’ll bet the farm that the overwhelming majority of those students don’t give a damn about this “issue.” The only thing they are probably made about is the school board calling off the prom.

Hey Soggy: I don’t disagree at all.
If the board hadn’t canceled the prom, everyone would have gone and not worried about it. If McM hadn’t decided to throw a hissy over the hetero rule, everyone would have gone and not worried about it. But those possibilities are foreclosed.
Probably a group of families will organize a private party to substitute for the prom. Students will be invited to that, and will get their prom. If the court forces the school to also reinstate the “official” prom, certainly some students will go, but it’s hard to think very many will. Showing up will be interpreted as taking sides, much different from before someone made a fuss. Because of that, there will be a lot of social and parental pressure to stay away. And everyone will be at the substitute party anyway.

How many stupid decisions can their be in one issue?
1. Why should a school give a crap if someone is a lesbian or not? Or if they are bringing a gay partner to a dance? Schools aren’t supposed to be instruments of moral or social policy. They are supposed to educate.
2. Regardless of how damn stupid the reason, shoudn’t the school board be able to to sponsor a prom or not sponsor a prom if they wish?
The problem with the gay political movement isn’t that they want to be gay. The problem is that they want to assert rights (like the right to have a prom) that simply don’t exist under our constitution. I’m willing to leave them the hell alone to do whatever they want to do if they will quit asking for all kinds of damn rights that they just don’t have.

Oh good glory, its baaaaack.....another lawsuit (http://nems360.com). Only posting this as a FYI, kind of a hold-on for the news coverage ride cause you know absolutely nothing (in Congress or on a state level) is more important (to some in the media) that this story....

I know that the ACLU is a socialist, Marxist organization by the suits they file. Does it possibly mean that they are also all homosexuals and lesbians by the same measure?
