Just what economically struggling Mississippi needs: Another state board of education (for charter schools) erected on top of the present constitutional State Board of Education.
This new board, formally called the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board, was created by Republicans now running state government to oversee what amounts to a new layer of public education. Charter schools are seen by the GOPers as a silver bullet to "fix the broken public school system."
How many of the schools will be established is still open to question, but under the new state law no more than 15 can be approved in one fiscal year. Though a number of Mississippians
