COCHRAN STATEMENT ON U.S. SUPREME COURT IMMIGRATION DECISION

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today released the
following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court decision in U.S. v.
Texas, which blocks implementation of President Obama's executive action to
defer the deportation of people in the United States illegally:
"The Supreme Court decision recognizes that President Obama does not have
the legal authority to make laws and set immigration policies on his own.
This ruling will help ensure that our nation's immigration laws remain the
responsibility of the Congress and are not subject to unilateral change by
executive action."
The Supreme Court's 4-4 decision upholds the ruling of a lower court order
that prohibits the president from implementing new policies to grant "lawful
presence" and thereby work authorization and status to illegal immigrants.

Cochran in April joined an amicus brief with U.S.
Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and other Republican U.S. Senators in support
of the state-led lawsuit challenging executive actions taken by President
Obama to defer deportation of more than four million illegal immigrants.

Officials from 25 states, including Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, were
plaintiffs in U.S. v. Texas.
