That the state's six-member (one black Democrat and five white Republican) congressional delegation would seek a prestigious national honor for the slain pioneer Mississippi civil rights leader 53 years after his death naturally raises a great many eyebrows and begs the question: Why now? Hopefully it did not stem from some Republican strategy to boost Donald Trump's poor standing in the nation's black constituency.
