Mental health system needs reform: Gov. Phil Bryant
We have to do better. There is no other option.
The current governing structure of the Department of Mental Health provides for an executive director who is appointed by a board. Nothing within the governing structure or state law requires the executive director to report to the governor’s office or to any other elected official. That is troublesome. It is imperative an agency whose mission is so critical be directly accountable to taxpayers through an elected official.
Clearly, something must change if we are to fulfill our moral obligation to those fighting mental illness and their families. Doing nothing will only embolden the status quo and leave those in the care of MDMH further behind.
