Senate revives its own divorce reforms

The Senate on Wednesday revived and unanimously passed its divorce reform measures that a House chairman had killed in committee without a vote.

Sens. Sally Doty, R-Brookhaven; Gray Tollison, R-Oxford, and David Blount, D-Jackson, successfully amended House Bill 1356, a measure dealing with criminal sexual assault protection orders, to add divorce reform measures the Senate had previously overwhelmingly passed.
One would create lengthy separation — two years or more — as a 13th ground for divorce if the couple has no minor children. The other would add "including spousal domestic abuse" to and remove the word "habitual" from the existing ground of divorce for "cruel and inhuman treatment."
