COCHRAN: PERDUE “GOING TO DO A FINE JOB” AS AGRICULTURE SECRETARY

Expresses Confidence in Nominee at Senate Agriculture Committee Confirmation Hearing

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, today recommended Senate confirmation of Sonny Perdue as the Secretary of Agriculture.

Cochran, a former chairman of the committee, participated in the confirmation hearing for Perdue.  The Senator expressed confidence that the former Georgia Governor’s experience and leadership would benefit U.S. Department of Agriculture and American agricultural interests.

Cochran’s remarks:

“Mr. Chairman, thank you very much for your kind remarks about me and my interest in agriculture, and the obligation that we have as government to ensure the fair funding of important government programs that, in many cases, help farmers when they are in desperate straits with weather disasters and other challenges that come along from time to time that really could put our country in very difficult economic situations.

“I am confident in your leadership, in your insights, your experiences—all to be brought to the challenge of the Office of Secretary of Agriculture.  I’m confident that you’re going to do a fine job.  We look forward to working closely with you to identify problems when they arise and can be addressed in a positive way to suit our country’s interests, economic interests as well.”

Cochran, who also serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee, met with Perdue on Jan. 30 to discuss issues facing agriculture in Mississippi and the nation.

With a favorable recommendation from the Agriculture Committee, Perdue’s nomination will be referred to the full Senate for confirmation.
