Internet collections appear to have impact

It appears that the voluntary collection of the use tax by Amazon and other online retailers is having a positive impact on Mississippi’s revenue collections.

For the month of March, the state collected $20 million in use tax – up 8.9 percent from the amount collected in March 2016.

The use tax in Mississippi is a 7 percent tax levied primarily on items that are purchased by Mississippians from out-of-state vendors. State Revenue Commissioner Herb Frierson has been working to convince online retailers to voluntarily collect the 7 percent tax on items sold to Mississippians and remit those collections to the state.

Based on March collections, Frierson’s effort is working.
