2 lawmakers challenging in court governor's authority to cut K-12 school funding

SPLC lawsuit against Mississippi in backdoor attempt to legislate school funding by yallpolitics on Scribd

Two state lawmakers are challenging Gov. Phil Bryant’s authority to cut the state budget including nearly $20 million in funding from public schools this fiscal year.

The Southern Poverty Law Center filed the lawsuit Wednesday in Hinds County Chancery Court on behalf of Rep. Bryant Clark, D-Pickens, and Sen. John Horhn, D-Jackson. The lawsuits challenge the cuts as unconstitutional.

Bryant called the lawsuit "ridiculous."

"The latest attempt by the Democrats and their allies to use the court system in a desperate grasp for relevance poses a genuine danger to Mississippi credit rating," Bryant said in a statement Thursday.
