Legislature passes funding bills, wraps up special session in a day

Lawmakers also approved two measures Bryant added to the special session agenda on Monday, after it had started.

One of the bills will restore the $1.6 million that was supposed to go to the Point Cadet Leasing Fund.

The city of Biloxi had filed a lawsuit in Chancery Court asking that the  Point Cadet settlement agreement be enforced that requires the state to provide Biloxi its share of revenue from leases in the Point Cadet development in Biloxi where the Golden Nugget Casino is located.

Last year when the state swept special fund money into the general fund, it took the almost $1.6 million that was supposed to go into the Point Cadet Leasing Fund. Under the settlement agreement, Biloxi's share of the money was $606,350. The Institutions of Higher Learning is supposed to receive $493,810, and the Public Trust Tidelands Fund administered by the secretary of state's office was supposed to also receive $493,810.

Bryant, at the Capitol on Monday, said he added this to the special session agenda hoping to avoid lawsuit expenses.
