Ocean Springs increases city taxes to fund employee raises, annexation bid

OCEAN SPRINGS, Mississippi -- For only the second time in the past two decades, the City of Ocean Springs has raised property taxes.

Last week, aldermen voted 6-1 to enact a three-mill increase on ad valorem taxes in the city. Each mill represents $10 in taxes on each $100,000 of assessed value of a property. So a three-mill increase will result in an extra $30 in taxes on a $100,000 home.

The good news: The Ocean Springs School District lowered its taxes by 2.69 mills last year and did not seek an increase this year, so homeowners will pay essentially the same in property tax as they did in 2016.
