US Senate Candidate Ronnie Musgrove will likely have many questions to answer with a newly unsealed round of federal indictments of people associated with the Facilities Group in Georgia.

In the indictment, the Government alleges that campaign finance reports were intentionally circumvented at a July 23 party in Smyrna, Georgia, home of the Facilities Group. TFG provided support and logistics for the now failed $50 million debacle also known as the Beef Plant.

A copy of Musgrove's July 2003 campaign finance report can be found here. In it, you will notice in red boxes the names of people/entities that appear to have made donations in conjunction with that Georgia event, referenced on Page 6 of the indictment.

Our friend Sid Salter also agrees.

One major exclusion in the list of investigative agencies which include State Auditor Stacey Pickering, US Attorney Jim Greenlee, and the FBI was none other than our own Attorney General Jim Hood. This would make the second such major criminal investigation initiated by the Feds that has not seen fit to draw from the expansive criminal prosecution experiencial reservior that our former "tough as nails" DA-turned-AG brings to the table.

With Musgrove being the only announced candidate for the Democrats in the Special Election to be held in November, it is a likely bet that his party will circle the wagons to protect and defend at all costs their only shot at gaining a Senate seat anytime soon.

Good job… wondering if anyone is going to get a statement from Musgrove today or if he’s going to have a press conference now...??

Posted by From the Right on 03-25-2008 at 05:17 PM [link]

Alan, wouldn’t it just be easier to go ahead arrest all Democrats in the state?

Posted by Two Dogs on 03-25-2008 at 05:19 PM [link]

I think the next step will be to look at legislative leader’s finance reports to see if there is some commonality in financial contributions.

I trust the YallPolitics Nation will take that task upon itself.

I did a little homework to get everything started.

So you did.  I missed this comment and those red boxes.  I feel like Jim Hood right now.

Alan,

You should start a new thread for Hood comments on the beef plant fiasco.  Here’s one from a Jan. 2006 presser announcing Hall’s plea:

“I’ve learned money truly is the root of all evil,” Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said.

Indeed.

“I am trying to just run my own race. Since I have been asked by members of the press, I will confirm that in all my years as a prosecutor, the Beef Plant case is the first I have seen where an investigator issues a press release that he is investigating a case the day before I am set to wire up the target to try to flip him against others. The confidential informant was burned at that point. It is hard to slip up on a criminal when a law enforcement agency announces an investigation in the newspaper.

Had we been able to record conversations with the confidential informant and other potential targets of the investigation, we may have been able to uncover others who may have been involved in the case. Unfortunately, due to the untimely press release, we will never know.”

Attorney General Jim Hood
State of Mississippi

Yet, here we are with indictments from the Federal side.

Musgrove now can point to the fact that his two largest donors to any of his many campaigns are both either in jail or headed to jail and now the icing on the cake is now firmly connected to a scandal that should land him in jail beside them when it is all said and done.  If he escapes jail the individuals who constructed the beefPLant bribe with this unnamed political figure will end up in jail.

Posted by Goldwater Republican on 03-25-2008 at 08:34 PM [link]

Is Musgrove the unnamed official in ANYTHING?  If not, he should be.

Posted by liblen on 03-25-2008 at 08:35 PM [link]

Also - this guy shouldn’t be elected as Class Clown nevermind US Senate.  Give me a break.

Posted by Goldwater Republican on 03-25-2008 at 08:37 PM [link]

Goldwater:  there’s no more $$ in the coffers for democratic campaigns in mississppi, so who cares?  BACK OVER CHRISTMAS WHEN HOOD WAS FIGHTING THE GOVERNOR ABOUT THE ELECTION, I THOUGHT TO MYSELF—WHY BOTHER?  What a dumba** and ill-conceived strategy . . . there’s no campaign $$ left to support a musgrove now that all the high-dollar donors have gone down with the law, so to speak.

Posted by liblen on 03-25-2008 at 08:52 PM [link]

Musgrove is counting on the national dems to pour in money to save him.  Certainly they are now saying that they shouldnt waste their time with a guy who has more baggage than a 747.

On WTVA website…

“Musgrove Mentioned in Court Papers Responding to Beef Plant Indictment
The name of former Governor Ronnie Musgrove has come up in a defense attorney’s response to a 16-count indictment concerning the failed beef plant in Yalobusha County.

That attorney is asking the court for permission to use two polygraph examinations that his client took in 2006.

Papers filed with the court Tuesday night show that Robert Moultrie, chairman and chief executive officer of The Facility Group, was asked during one of the exams about Musgrove.

Moultrie said in the exam that he did not expect a payoff for contributing to Musgrove in 2003.

Musgrove did not immediately return calls Tuesday from The Associated Press.

He was not charged or named in this latest round of indictments.”

goldwater:  he needs to hold his breath til the national democrats come through for him.  it ain’t goin’ happen—nevermind who gets the nomination.  hilary cancelled her fundraiser at scruggs’ home within 2-3 days of his indictment.  barack isn’t about to pony up behind the losers and criminals in this state.  no, afraid they’re on their own about now.

I want to remind you new guys and gals, who began posting on this board during the latest Scrugg-o-rama, that ole Reagan Dem has been eluding to this for what...5 months now?

In the literature business, they’d call my words “foreshadowing”. I’d call it a damned good guess.

Posted by Reagan Dem on 03-25-2008 at 09:30 PM [link]

I remember well, RD… you were the first one I thought about, as a matter of fact!

Posted by From the Right on 03-25-2008 at 09:34 PM [link]

Thanks FTR.  It’s good to be appreciated when things finally come to pass!

Posted by Reagan Dem on 03-25-2008 at 09:36 PM [link]

from the right:  musgrove must not have any shame or any conscience.  it is appalling and shocking to have certain information that is denied, refuted, ignored, and/or otherwise disclaimed in any way by these JOKES that call themselves politicians.  I want to say more, to tell YALL what I know, but I’m just dumb-founded, astounded, and speechless.  Don’t know what to do with the information—NOT AN EASY THING TO DECIDE WHEN FOLKS WILL SABOTAGE YOU IN A HEARTBEAT.

Posted by liblen on 03-25-2008 at 09:45 PM [link]

I’d say you’re right on track, liblen.  Only allude here to what you know.  But you’ve pretty much nailed Ronnie Musgrove, in many respects.

WLBT story:

“Campaign manager Amanda Crumley said,"Ronnie Musgrove had nothing to do with the awarding of the beef processing plant contract and at no time did anyone try to influence him regarding the awarding of such a contract."”

Posted by From the Right on 03-25-2008 at 10:36 PM [link]

Mmmm...hmmmm…

Posted by Reagan Dem on 03-25-2008 at 10:38 PM [link]

Seems that Amanda would not have made the statement that no one tried to influence Ronnie… how could/would she know.. how could/would HE know unless he WAS influenced?  Her job isn’t to speak on behalf of the defendants, though that’s exactly what she did.

Folks it is just more of the same. Same GOB network, same legal/political/judicial system that has kept us dead ass last on any list of any good achievements for years. We seem to do rather well on the lists of bad achievements?? Also throw in the press and a total lack of true revealing journalism--thank heavens for sites such as ya’ll and folo!!

How can there be federal indictments of a “conspiracy to corruptly influence and reward a public official “ without that piublic official being indicted as well.  Am I to assume that some indictment will be coming down in time and perhaps they want to pressure those currently indicted for possible evidence.  But , if they have enough to indict the georgia boys , doesnt that mean they have the public official???? (Musgrove)

folo’s NMC reveals today that he is none other than Tom Freeland, Oxford atty representing Robert Moultrie

I see you’ve got it up as a thread Alan....

Posted by From the Right on 03-26-2008 at 11:01 AM [link]

Maybe Musgrove will admit he was approached but isn’t sure if he was influenced or not.

Hood filed suit against The Facility Group in 2007...and he hired a special prosecutor to handle the case.  News to me.

Posted by ccvz on 03-26-2008 at 03:26 PM [link]

CORRECTION:  I misspoke - it was a special assistant atty gen… not a special prosecutor.

Posted by ccvz on 03-26-2008 at 03:36 PM [link]

JDBerry… your quote above made me start thinking about Hood’s comments that he was just about to wire his confidential informant up and record and BAM!  Phil’s press release foiled the whole thing.

I’m confused---I thought that Hood didn’t have wire tapping powers and that’s what he’s been in front of the legislature begging for the past couple of months.

How can there be federal indictments of a “conspiracy to corruptly influence and reward a public official” without that public official being indicted as well.

I think the answer is, because the conspiracy doesn’t have to succeed.  They only need to agree to the unlawful prupose and then take action toward that purpose.

Posted by GhostOfGeneralSherman on 03-26-2008 at 04:34 PM [link]

Conspircy to corruptly influence and reward a public official!  Sounds like Scruggs and Langston"s motives with with there large donations of $400,000.00 to the Hood!

Posted by quackhead on 03-26-2008 at 08:43 PM [link]

Ghost, are you saying they (the GA boys) may have attempted to corrupt and influence the public official but he/she (public official) did not “take the bait”? Thus the GA boys get indicted and the public official is looked upon as having done no wrong.

Posted by JimS on 03-27-2008 at 04:53 AM [link]

I’d say that if the Feds are able to get pleas or verdicts on the alleged issues of those indicted now, that Mr. Musgrove has a serious problem.

If the Fedsaren’t able to get pleas or verdicts as described above, then Mr. Musgrove will have dodged a legal bullet, but regardless, for those interested in Mr. Musgrove’s campaign in this calendar year should admit that these circumstances render his election prospects as toast, whether they like it or not.

Hood filed a civil suit in January of ‘07 but can’t seem to put together any major criminal suits?  Why does it seem he is so willing to hire Special Assistant Attorneys General to file civil suits on behalf of the state that makes those attorneys tons of money, but he cannot follow through with major criminal cases?

On August 17 U.S. District Judge Neal Biggers sentenced Richard Hall, Jr., to eight years in federal prison and ordered him to pay $577,964 in restitution. (C-L, Sid Salter column published August 29)

A month later, Hall was set to appear on September 29 before Judge Andrew Baker in Sardis. “Attorney General Jim Hood said he is recommending a sentence to run concurrently with the federal term, which means Hall will serve both sentences at the same time in federal prison.” (C-L, Metro edition, September 28)

The former beef plant owner “was sentenced Friday to eight years on state charges of committing mail fraud in the failed project that cost Mississippi millions of dollars. But the sentence will coincide with the eight years he will serve in federal prison...” (C-L, Metro Edition September 29.)

Atty. Gen. Jim Hood “says state investigation is over.” (C-L, Op-Ed, October 7.)

Who did Hood hire for the civil suit? anyone know?

Dorsey R. Carson, Jr is the only name I’ve found so far.
Can anyone else confirm.

Polygraph evidence hearing today in beef plant case 5-1-2008 folo

FOLO snip> from hearing on April 30, 2008
Robert Moultrie, 57, of Smyrna, Ga., chairman and chief executive officer of The Facility Group, was indicted in March along with two other company executives for allegedly corruptly giving campaign donations to a Mississippi official to reward the official for the state’s hiring of the Facility Group.
The Mississippi official was not named in the indictments. But a series of events outlined in the indictments match up with campaign contributions Ronnie Musgrove reported in 2003, when the Democrat unsuccessfully sought a second term as governor. Musgrove was not indicted.
