BARBOUR wants Kay B. Hutchison to stay in D.C.

CEDAR CREEK, Tex. -- Given that this year's Republican Governors Association meeting is taking place here in Texas, reporters today asked RGA Chairman Haley Barbour, the governor of Mississippi, to weigh in on the Rick Perry-vs.-Kay Bailey Hutchison GOP primary for Texas governor.

Barbour said that the RGA doesn't take sides in primaries, but that he was personally backing Perry. "I personally think Gov. Perry should be re-elected," he said.

And then he added this: "I hope Sen. Hutchison will stay in the United States Senate for the rest of my life."

Asked why he supported Perry over Hutchison, Barbour replied, "I thought he deserved re-election." He then went on to say: "I would hate to lose Kay Bailey in the Senate."

When asked if he has talked to Hutchison about staying in the Senate, Barbour responded simply, "She and I have talked."

Odd, that he weighed in, but maybe he had to.

But as savvy as the governor is politcally, backing individual candidates in party primaries haven’t been his strong suit.

Haley is right.  Texas needs to keep Ric Perry and the country needs Kay Bailey Hutchinson in Washington.
The word is that Hutchinson has two young children, adopted I think, and has decided she would rather move back to Texas and rear them so she just decides for her own reasons that she wants to be governor instead of Senator.  This is more of a “personal” than a “Republican” kind of thing to do.

I honestly don’t know.  I’m never a big fan of pro-choice Pubs, esp. in the South.  As a general rule, a pro-choice Pub is more likely to cave on the other principles eventually.  I don’t recollect KBH doing so, though.

But it’s also unusual for a Governor to run for a 3rd term.  The electorate is still restless.  But Perry is likely to survive the primary.  Can’t help but wonder does this somehow help whoever the Dem is in Nov, though.

I don’t that.

Meant I don’t buy that.

My guess is he’d just like to save all the effort, money and hard feelings the primary will cost.  Much better to spend it fighting the D’s in the general.  Since Hutchison hasn’t resigned from the Senate, her primary challenge is not yet a certainty.  So, tell everyone what a wonderful job they’re doing and how important it is they stay put.  Add your Haley Barbour prestige to the various other support for Perry, and maybe make the challenge seem a bit more risky.  If you’re lucky, the lady decides Washington needs her.

Like some of you, I don’t know that KBH is my favorite idea of a Republican senator.  But Haley is a pragmatist, not an ideologue; that won’t be most important to him.
