This bill of the day would amend the Mississippi Employment Protection Act to keep employers accountable for only hiring legal citizens of the United States for any type of job.
SB 2015 was authored by Senator Angela Hill and intended to be enforced regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin or religion.
The bill originally reads:
Employers in the State of Mississippi shall only hire employees who are legal citizens of the United States of America or are legal aliens. For purposes of this section, a legal alien is an individual who was lawfully present in the United States at the time of employment and for the duration of employment, or was permanently residing in the United States under color of law at the time of employment and for the duration of employment.
The bill also requires employers to register and utilize a status verification system to verify any newly hired individuals. It also includes penalties for employers who discharge a known U.S. citizen from work, while continuing to employ someone who is suspected of being an illegal alien hired after July 1 of 2008.
An employer will not be held accountable in the event they were given false documents without their knowledge.
However here is the change:
A Mississippi employer that utilizes contract workers supplied by a third-party employer which fails to comply with this section shall be held accountable for the failure on the same basis as the third-party employer.
The bill was referred to the Judiciary A Committee.
