Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba has issued a statement regarding the city government’s stance on potential ICE raids.
Nationwide ICE raids began Sunday, July 14, as part of President Donald Trump’s plan to remove immigrants who already had court orders to leave. 10 major cities were discussed as the targets of the raids. Jackson didn’t make the list; the closest cities to have ICE raids conducted were New Orleans and Atlanta, however, the raids in those cities were delayed due to Hurricane Barry.
This isn’t the first time that the City of Jackson has ignored immigration policy for undocumented immigrants. Jackson is known as a “Sanctuary City.” The Mississippi Justice Institute filed a lawsuit against the city for its sanctuary policies in March 2018.
