A nationwide lottery scam involving an estimated $4 million in bogus checks has been traced back to a small town in north Mississippi, where three people were arrested on Friday.

Three Nettleton residents have been charged with possession of counterfeit bank notes, wire or mail fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire or mail fraud.

The arrests were the first in a case of this kind in Mississippi, Attorney General Jim Hood said. The investigation drew the attention of federal, state and local agencies.
