A Breakthrough for a Program, and for Its Coach (Great piece)

A little more than 20 years ago, Warde Manuel experienced the saddest day of his intercollegiate athletic life. A defensive tackle for the University of Michigan, Manuel had just been hit with the news that his college football career was over. The nerve condition in his neck, diagnosed as spinal stenosis, had degenerated to the extent that the pain was constant and his long-term health was at risk. Coach Bo Schembechler told Manuel the university would gladly honor his scholarship and encouraged him to get on with his life.
