We congratulate Steven Palazzo on capturing the Republican nomination to represent South Mississippi in Congress.
Though Tuesday’s results were yet more evidence politics can be unpredictable, Palazzo is now heavily favored to win the general election in November and return to the House of Representatives for a third term.
He’ll probably return on his own terms….
…Far more important to voters, it would seem, were Palazzo’s high standing in the Republican ranks of Congress, where even as a freshmen he received coveted committee assignments. He now boasts a seat on the Armed Services Committee, the Homeland Security Committee and the Science, Space and Technology Committee, where he chairs the Space Subcommittee.
For a region so dependent on federal spending, such clout is not to be taken for granted.
And we did not take it lightly when we endorsed Gene Taylor in his rematch with Palazzo.
But despite the high regard many Coast residents have for Taylor’s more than 20 years of service and experience, it was not enough to offset Palazzo’s popularity across the Pine Belt portions of the 4th Congressional District.
So once more we thank Taylor for his service and salute him, Tom Carter, Tavish Kelly and Ron Vincent for the manner in which they campaigned.
That Palazzo was able to hold his opponents to a total of less than 50 percent of the votes cast in the Republican primary Tuesday is a testament to his political skills and appeal.
We salute him on both.
