Miss. AG’s office wants DA Smith’s attorney off case

The attorney general’s office wants to block attorney Jim Waide from representing Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith, who was arrested in June on allegations he had assisted criminal defendants.

Smith, who has not been indicted on the charges, faces a six-count affidavit claiming he aided two defendants — Christopher Butler and Darnell Turner.

On Friday, the attorney general’s office asked the court to remove Waide from the case because the prosecutors consider him a potential witness against Smith. The claim the attorney could serve as a witness against his own client appears to be based solely on recorded conversations between Smith and a confidential informant.
