Amber-alert style ‘Blue Alert’ in the works for officers killed, hurt on duty

When George County Sheriff Garry Welford was struck and killed by a vehicle in July 2010, all the surrounding jurisdictions were alerted via radio traffic, telephone calls and other traditional methods.

Now legislators and law enforcement alike are working on instituting a way to put the word out all over the state as soon as an officer is hurt or killed in the line of duty.

Sen. David Blount, D- Jackson, has introduced legislation to create the Blue Alert system.

The system would be activated when the suspect has not been captured, Hinds County Chief Deputy Steve Pickett said.
