Kemper Project’s nearly $7 billion cost by the numbers

The Kemper Project is easily Mississippi’s most expensive construction project, with the plant’s capital costs up to nearly $7 billion.

The clean coal power plant is designed to convert lignite coal mined on site into synthesis gas and remove 65 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions, but it is more than three years behind schedule and more than $5 billion over its expected construction costs.

If the $6.938 billion needed to build Kemper in $1 bills was stacked on top of each other, they would reach 468 miles into the atmosphere.
