Lawyers paid more than policyholders in Katrina case

GULFPORT — Legal fees and expenses have exceeded the award to policyholders in a Katrina wind vs. water case.

Even so, a group of attorneys led by Don Barrett of Lexington got less than they were requesting. U.S. District Court Judge Sul Ozerden recently awarded the legal team $1.9 million. The lawyers requested $2.3 million for representing the Penthouse Owners Association Inc., a Pass Christian condominium group, in a lawsuit filed against its insurer, Lloyd’s of London. Lloyd’s waited almost a year after the storm to deny the claim, forcing Penthouse to sue.
