County nailed for overtaxing

Madison County has collected twice the legal amount in taxes from taxpayers for the South Madison Fire Protection District to the tune of nearly $300,000, an annual audit report from the State Auditor’s Office revealed this week.

The audit, conducted for fiscal year ending September 2014, found that the county levied 4 mills for the Fire District despite being statutorily limited to collect only 2 mills. The collection resulted in $284,017 in excess ad valorem taxes collected.
