The state Department of Audit is requesting records from Hinds County after the Board of Supervisors voted last week to pay health-insurance costs for employees’ dependents. Paying such costs apparently violates state law.

“I cannot comment on an ongoing investigation, but, generally speaking, our office would attempt to recover any misspent funds on behalf of the taxpayers,” Audit Department spokeswoman Lisa Shoemaker said.

Last week, Hinds supervisors voted 3-2 to renew their employee health coverage including spouse and dependent coverage – tacking an additional $1.2 million onto the annual insurance tab.
