AUSA Bob Norman confirms P.L. Blake is under investigation

Federal prosecutors in Oxford confirmed they’re still interested in Birmingham businessman P.L. Blake, a mysterious figure who earned $50 million from tobacco settlement expenses. Blake testified he earned the money by clipping newspapers and keeping his ear to the ground for Scruggs, who engineered the settlement.

“Is he going to be charged? I don’t know,” said Norman, the key prosecutor in these cases. “There’s still an investigation, and I haven’t decided.”

Blake is mentioned on undercover tapes the FBI kept in another legal fees dispute involving Scruggs, this one in Lafayette County. Scruggs and others have pleaded guilty to a scheme in which the judge there was paid $40,000 to rule in Scruggs’ favor.

The judge, it turned out, was cooperating with the FBI.
