U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson’s chief of staff says the congressman is not agreeing to debate his opponent before the November general election, as reported by The Panolian.
Panolian staff writer Billy Davis reported that Lanier Avant, in response to a question about whether Thompson would agree to debate Bill Marcy, said the 2nd District congressman “welcomes any opportunity to defend his record.”
Davis defended his reporting. He noted he twice asked Avant whether the long-serving Democratic congressman would agree to debate his GOP opponent. Both times, he said, Avant’s response was: “The congressman welcomes any opportunity to defend his record.”
