Black Caucus says it won’t support Smith as speaker

The 36 African-American House members who compose the Legislative Black Caucus have adopted a motion saying they will not support Jeff Smith, D-Columbus, for speaker of the House.

Smith has been trying to form a coalition of all 47 Republicans and a handful of Democrats to unseat Billy McCoy, D-Rienzi, as presiding officer of the 122-member House.

Some of Smith’s supporters have said they believe some of the black members, who are all Democrats, might throw their support behind the Columbus legislator.
