Today, Boyce Adams, Republican candidate in Mississippi’s First Congressional District special election, issued the following statement urging Governor Phil Bryant to veto Mississippi Senate Bill 2161 (SB 2161):

“In my small business, we see the effects of federal government overreach every day, and Common Core is a dramatic example of Washington’s overreach into education policies that are the responsibility of state and local governments. It is clear the Obama Administration is using Common Core as a tool to coerce state and local schools, which is why it must be stopped. Unfortunately, SB 2161 falls well short of the goal of killing Common Core in Mississippi. I share Governor Bryant’s concerns about this weak bill and I urge him to veto SB 2161 in order to produce stronger legislation that ensures Mississippians are in charge of Mississippi education policy, not the federal government. In Congress, I’ll fight against Common Core to make sure education decisions are not driven by the federal government.”
