Budget will reveal candidates’ priorities

State fiscal leaders have begun talking about the arduous task of putting together the next state budget. And Mississippians got a glimpse of things to come in the 2011 legislative session — disagreements over priorities, the use of one-time money, state reserves and more service cuts.

“Let’s go pray and be kind to one another,” said House Speaker Billy McCoy after members of the committee fought over competing budget priorities.

While it is clear there won’t be enough revenue to cover the needs, especially since the state is losing stimulus funding, things actually are looking up.

Darrin Webb, the state’s chief economist, said the economy is expanding, but slowly and it will be several years before the state recovers.
