Butch Thompson admitted it was a call he has been waiting on for quite some time. And that call finally came Tuesday night from new Mississippi State head coach John Cohen. On Wednesday evening, Thompson was named as the Bulldog pitching coach and is anxious to head to Starkville to being his new duties.
“Well, I got a phone call, one I have waited 16 years for and it took about two seconds to decide,” said Thompson, who owns 16 years of coaching experience on the Division 1 level. “I talked to Coach Cohen last night and it was an opportunity to come back home and something I have always wished for.
“This is the level any coach wants to be at, in the SEC with its talent and fanfare and the love of baseball.”
Thompson has spent the last seven seasons as a pitching coach/recruiting coordinator in the Southeastern Conference – four years at Georgia and previously three years at Auburn.
