Childers ahead in fundraising
Nunnelee leads Republicans in 1st Dist. congressional race

OXFORD — Democrat U.S. Rep. Travis Childers raised $220,000 in the first quarter of 2010, leaving him with $700,000 cash on hand — more than twice the money available for his nearest rival, Republican state Sen. Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo.

That’s according to campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission for the race in North Mississippi’s First Congressional District.

Childers, a Realtor, nursing home operator and former Chancery Court clerk completing his first full term in Congress, has no opposition in the June 1 primary and is expected to enter the Nov. 2 general election campaign with well over $1 million on hand.

He has raised $1.06 million since January 2009, and his campaign has not yet repaid a $100,000 loan he made when he began running for Congress, chief of staff Brad Morris said Friday.
