Candidates eye economy, education

The issues facing Mississippi in the coming years aren’t taken lightly by the four men running for the Republican nomination to take over state Sen. Lee Yancey’s seat.

With no other party contending, the District 20 state Senate race is one of many this year that will be decided by the Aug. 2 primary.

For three candidates, the primary issue facing the district’s voters in northern Rankin County and southeastern Madison County is the economy.

Brandon resident Steve Gaines said the economy will be at the forefront when the Legislature meets in January.
