Census info won’t ease redistricting

Census information for Mississippi that is expected to be released Monday is the engine that will drive the wheels of the redistricting process for anxious officials in DeSoto County.

But the task still appears “impossible” ahead of a March election filing deadline, they say.

“We’ve been told by the U.S. Justice Department to expect our 2010 official figures on Feb. 7,” state Rep. Wanda Jennings, R-Southaven, said in Jackson. Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey and Virginia will be the first states of the 50 to receive data, due to their having general state legislative elections in November.
