Cities join together in fight over control of harbors

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) – The battle lines are being drawn between South Mississippi and Jackson over who controls harbors along the coast.

Gulfport is leading the charge against Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann who says the 1989 Public Tidelands Trust Act gives him authority over the harbors and the cities need to sign leases and share revenue with the state.

Gulfport contends that the Small Craft Harbor Act of 1972 gives cities control and they’re trying to get other cities in Harrison County to join them in the fight.
