A year after the state Legislature approved a new charter school law, no one has petitioned the Board of Education to open one.
Advocates say that does not reflect a lack of interest. The law is too restrictive, said Sen. Michael Watson, R-Pascagoula.
No charter school organization “is going to look at that law and say, ‘Hey, this is a great opportunity for us,’ ” Watson said.
Watson has co-authored a proposal that would make it easier to open a school and to attract students for charters.
