News that Mississippi didn’t even rate in the U.S. Department of Education’s “Race to the Top” challenge grant brought some dour denial from some quarters.
Gov. Haley Barbour tried to make it sound politically motivated: “Of the nine states that got a Race to the Top award, only one has a Republican governor. I wish it had been us,” Barbour said.
Well, wishing wouldn’t have made it so – nor was politics the reason Mississippi ranked 35th out of 37 states vying for part of the $500 million.
