DeLaughter’s betrayal of the public trust is one that cuts particularly deep. The former judge had earned a stellar reputation as a man of great personal courage and integrity.
However, DeLaughter’s reputation – along with much of the public’s confidence in the judicial system – has taken a powerful hit. Barbour’s committee should take that fact into account during the search for DeLaughter’s replacement.
Hinds County needs a qualified circuit court judge named to the bench as soon as possible. But integrity and dignity should be high on the list of qualifications.
