Strategy in Afghanistan will work, Wicker says

“We have the right approach of clear, hold … build and sustain, and rely on local security forces, not only the Afghan army, but the Afghan national police,” said Wicker of Tupelo.

He also emphasized the importance of winning the support of local leaders.

Wicker, who returned Monday, took the weekend trip with fellow Republicans – Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rep. Mike Castle of Delaware.

The feeling among the troops is “we’re in the position to win in 2010,” said Wicker, a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees.
