CL wrap up of Hyde-Smith win in ag post

Cindy Hyde-Smith on Tuesday night got one step closer toward becoming Mississippi’s commissioner of agriculture and commerce.

Less than a year after switching from the Democratic Party, Hyde-Smith was declared winner of the GOP primary, with 53 percent of the vote with about 71 percent of precincts reporting.

Challengers Max Phillips and Dannie Reed had 35 percent and 12 percent, respectively.

Hyde-Smith will face Pickens Mayor and Democrat Joel Gill and Reform Party candidate Cathy L. Toole of Biloxi in the Nov. 8 general election.
