Some of Republican Gov. Haley Barbour’s confidants say they aren’t shocked he ultimately decided not to run for president in 2012.
While he had been demonstrating all the telltale signs of a contender in the months leading up to his Monday announcement, Barbour always had a tinge of hesitation – telling people he was considering a bid, but had not made up his mind.
“He was being honest – he hadn’t decided yet,” said South Carolina political consultant Chip Felkel, who organized events in January to introduce Barbour to potential supporters. “I think he knows what it’s all about and ultimately decided against it.”
