The attacks were unfair at best. Metro area Republicans, after all, have frequently given money to Jackson Democrats over the years, including Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr., Councilman Frank Bluntson and state Sen. John Horhn, three Democrats whose party credentials aren’t questioned.
But they had their desired effect. On Election Day, a new poll released by WAPT showed the race had tightened to a 4-point advantage for Lee, down from its prior high of 14 points. The poll also said many voters changed their vote after watching a strong performance by Lumumba in a debate hosted by The Clarion-Ledger and WAPT. That debate focused more on criticisms than the issues.
