Treasurer: Moran is the best choice

Fitch, a Republican, is a an excellent candidate, having served as a bond attorney, and as head of the state Personnel Board. She has a good technical grasp of the job. From Madison with a well-financed campaign, she will certainly be a metro- area favorite.

But Moran, the Democratic mayor of Ocean Springs, edges her out in terms of qualifications, with more hands-on political experience, in addition to stellar credentials in economics.

Attorney general: Hood best choice

Most of the flak aimed at Hood by Simpson, stems from Hood’s approach to hiring outside counsel to handle state civil lawsuits.

Hood has used private attorneys, giving preference to those who bring potential cases to the state in the interest of state taxpayers. More important, Hood’s handling of private counsel is completely open: with details published on the AG’s website. Fees are awarded by the court in line with contracts, which are less than normal fees. The public can judge.

With a lack of resources in the AG’s civil litigation office, the state must hire outside counsel if it is to bring lawsuits to recover money owed Mississippi taxpayers and consumers.
