The interview took place the day before the Democratic primary for mayor and three days before his death. Melton was running for re-election, but came in third in the Democratic primary. He collapsed at his home as the polls closed and died two days later on May 7. The report was not transcribed until May 15.
Reeves said the quote pulled from that meeting where Melton admits guilt was in response to a hypothetical situation where he would accept a plea deal.
“I honestly think he said, ‘I’ll think about it,’” Reeves said. “We left it at that. No deal was made that day and he was thinking about it.”
