Attaboys & Oh Boys for Oct. 4

Oh Boy!

To the news from state Auditor Stacey Pickering who says his office found “blatant disregard for state purchasing rules and regulations” at the Mississippi Department of Education. The auditor is questioning millions of dollars in education spending, but called one batch of MDE purchases, totaling $214,470, “not just a red flag, but a red neon sign with an arrow on it, pointing.” Pickering’s office released information from two audits of MDE for fiscal years 2015 and 2016 that came on the heels of a scathing report released early last week by the state’s legislative watchdog panel. Both Pickering’s findings and the PEER report indicate MDE has made purchases and issued contracts without taking bids when the vendors were paid more than the threshold that requires competitive bids or pricing.
