Considering the accolades that greeted Thad Cochran’s announcement that he will seek a sixth term in the Senate, you would think he could be re-elected by acclamation.

“The campaign was over the minute he said he was going to run,” said political analyst Marty Wiseman, director of the Stennis Institute of Government at Mississippi State University and a self-described Democrat. “I don’t see him being challenged in any way, shape, form or fashion from any challenger.”

Cochran ended months of speculation about his political plans on Wednesday by saying that he wanted to remain Mississippi’s senior senator and that he would seek re-election next year.
